About the Merritt College Greenhouses
Merritt College in Oakland, California, is a public two-year community college established in 1954. The 125-acre campus sits on a hillside, offering students sweeping views of the Bay Area.
Around 6,700 students attend Merritt College, which offers a variety of associate degrees and certificates for students planning to transfer to a four-year institution or enter the workforce.
On September 2, 2025, Merritt College and the Peralta Community College District celebrated the grand opening of a new Horticultural Complex.
Prospiant manufactured and supplied materials for the college’s greenhouses. Greenhouse 1 is a 44’x72′ A-frame structure with a 12′ gutter height and three 24’x44′ zones. Greenhouse 2 is a 48’x64′ A-frame structure with a 12′ gutter height and two 24’x44′ zones.
This college greenhouse is the result of a major renovation that modernized Merritt College’s aging Horticultural Complex.
Renovated classrooms, labs, and new greenhouses make hands-on learning easier and strengthen the connection between outdoor and indoor spaces.
The college greenhouses play a key role in supporting the Horticulture Department’s wide range of educational programs.
The department serves around 1,600 students each year, offering 25 courses and eight degree and certificate programs.
The college plans to use the new greenhouses for instruction, plant propagation, and to support the community garden.
