About Lowe’s Greenhouse

Tucked into the scenic Chagrin Valley in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Lowe’s Greenhouse has been a beloved garden center destination for nearly a century.

What began in the 1920s as a catalog order business started by Carlton Lowe—known for its celebrated tuberous begonias—evolved into a thriving garden center under the care of Bud and Ernestine Griff, who purchased the business in the mid-1950s.

By the 1990s, Jeff and Mary Lynn Griff had expanded Lowe’s into a community staple, offering a wide range of products including annuals, perennials, trees, and shrubs. They also added a landscape design services division, a full-service florist, and a gift shop.

In 2019, Bob Scott and Sam Delpra purchased Lowe’s. They remain committed to upholding its legacy—still offering the treasured American Hybrid tuberous begonias—while continuously growing the business.

Today, customers find a great selection of high-quality plants at Lowe’s Greenhouse. But more than that, they discover a vibrant community hub—one that hosts classes, a local farmer’s market, immersive events like Art in the Greenhouse, and hands-on workshops covering propagation, germination, and plant care.

Cleveland Magazine recently named Lowe’s a 2025 Best of the East winner in the Best Garden Center category. The honor comes after more than 3,000 readers weighed in on their favorite go-to spots found on the East side of Cleveland.

To keep up with the changing seasons of business, Lowe’s has continuously invested in its infrastructure—with Prospiant helping turn those plans into purpose-built structures that grow with the business.

Years of Partnership in Growth and Greenhouse Design and Build

Over the years, Prospiant has partnered with Lowe’s Greenhouse on multiple projects to support the garden center’s ongoing growth.

We built the original main garden center greenhouse range—known as the Solarium—and later constructed additional greenhouses to create a more versatile, three-season shopping and plant sales area.

As part of Lowe’s retail transformation, we also replaced an aging retail building with a climate-controlled sales space that now links the greenhouse structures together and enhances the customer experience.

To unify the look and feel of the space, we reskinned the oldest greenhouse range and added new colored trim to blur the line between old and new.

Most recently, we expanded the original greenhouse footprint to increase the plant sales area and create an indoor-outdoor event space.

The Latest Greenhouse Addition

With Lowe’s Greenhouse hitting its 99th year in business in 2025, Bob and Sam marked the milestone with a fitting addition: a new structure affectionately named Greenhouse 99.

Designed and built in partnership with Prospiant, the new 7,668-square-foot Vail-style greenhouses replaced an aging structure and now supports both retail sales and garden center events.

Greenhouse 99 plugs into the existing retail footprint. That connection makes it easy for customers to wander back and forth among the indoor plant sales areas and the florist and gift shop.

Flexible by Design for Selling or Events

Lowe’s needed a greenhouse that could do double duty. It had to serve shoppers during regular hours with a smooth connection to the existing retail space. But just as important, it needed to transform easily into an event space when the time called for it.

The layout makes that possible. Sliding doors allow the staff to close off the greenhouse from the main store, and a second entrance offers easy after-hours access.

Inside, three overhead doors with glass panels open onto a stunning paved patio, making the space easily switched up for both indoor and outdoor events. The overhead doors also provide ventilation when necessary.

During the growing season, Greenhouse 99 houses annuals, houseplants, and vegetable starts. In winter, it provides shelter for tender perennials and serves as home to a local farmer’s market and other seasonal events.

Functional by Design for Everyday Work

Functionality for staff was also a main consideration. Previously, employees had to take a circuitous route from the production greenhouses to stock the retail greenhouses with plants.

Now, a fourth overhead door at the back of the greenhouse streamlines that process. Lowe’s also plans to add a loading dock in the future to make transporting plants and stocking even easier.

The new house includes unit heaters, drop-down guillotine side vents, and an atrium-style roof vent. The side venting has made a noticeable difference in air circulation and keeping the house cool in the summer, according to Bob.

Greenhouse 99 brings beauty, functionality, and flexibility into one well-designed space that supports both customers and staff. It’s one more way Lowe’s Greenhouse is setting itself up for the next 100 years.

Built to perform. Designed to impress. Greenhouse 99 is proof of what’s possible when what you need and what Prospiant knows come together in the right way. Ready when you are. Tell us what you need—we’ll get to work.
